Brushing Routine

Brush 2-3 times weekly with a pin brush and wide-toothed comb to work through the rough, tousled double coat. The PBGV's coat should look naturally unkempt -- never over-groom into a polished look. Use a mat splitter on any tangles that form behind the ears and in the leg furnishings.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 4-6 weeks with a texturizing shampoo that preserves the coat's rough, casual texture. Avoid heavy conditioners that weigh down the coat and make it look flat. The PBGV should look like they just had a romp through the French countryside, not a day at the salon.

Common Issues

• Ear infections due to long, pendulous ears trapping moisture
• Matting in the dense undercoat especially behind ears and in armpits
• Beard and mustache staining and odor from food
• Debris collection in the rough coat after outdoor activity
• Eye irritation from long eyebrow hair

Extend Your Grooming Results

Clean ears twice weekly with a drying ear solution to prevent infections in those long, heavy ear flaps. Comb the beard after every meal. Keep the hair between foot pads trimmed to prevent slipping and debris accumulation. Maintain the casual, tousled look by avoiding over-brushing.

Seasonal Care

PBGVs shed moderately in spring and fall as the undercoat turns over. In Houston's humid climate, their long ears are especially prone to yeast infections -- increase ear cleaning to every other day in summer. The rough coat provides some heat insulation but keep outdoor time limited in extreme heat.

Maintenance Schedule

Brush 2-3 times weekly, daily beard cleaning, ear cleaning twice weekly (more in summer), nail trims every 3 weeks, foot pad hair trimming bi-weekly, professional grooming every 6-8 weeks.
