Brushing Routine

Brush once weekly with a soft rubber curry comb or hound glove. The Azawakh's ultra-short, fine coat is among the easiest to maintain but benefits from regular skin stimulation. A chamois cloth rubbed over the coat after brushing adds shine to their taut, close-fitting coat.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 6-8 weeks with a gentle, moisturizing shampoo. Their thin, fine coat and lean body mean they lose heat quickly during baths -- use warm water and dry immediately. A mild oatmeal shampoo works well for their sensitive skin. Avoid heavy products that weigh down the naturally sleek coat.

Extend Your Grooming Results

Apply a light skin moisturizer or coconut oil weekly, especially during dry months. Provide thick, cushioned bedding to prevent pressure calluses on elbows and hips. Handle gently during grooming -- their lean build means there is minimal padding between skin and bone. Keep grooming sessions calm and efficient.

Seasonal Care

Azawakhs shed minimally year-round. Despite their Saharan origins, they are sensitive to Houston's humid heat -- provide shade and limit exercise in peak temperatures. In winter, they absolutely need coats and sweaters since they have virtually no body fat or undercoat. Keep them warm during grooming.

Maintenance Schedule

Weekly soft rubber curry brush, daily chamois cloth wipe, skin moisturizer 1-2 times weekly, nail trims every 2-3 weeks, ear checks weekly, professional grooming every 8-10 weeks.
