Brushing Routine

Brush 2-3 times weekly with a pin brush and long-toothed metal comb to work through the silky, medium-length coat. Focus on the feathering on the chest, legs, and tail where mats form most readily. A slicker brush helps with the denser areas behind the ears and in the pantaloons.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 4-6 weeks with a moisturizing shampoo and lightweight conditioner. The Borzoi's silky coat should feel smooth and flowing, not heavy. Use a force dryer on a warm setting to straighten and separate the coat while drying -- air-drying causes wave and potential matting.

Common Issues

• Feathering matting on chest, legs, and hindquarters
• Sensitivity to anesthesia affecting any sedated grooming procedures
• Thin skin that tears easily during dematting
• Bloat risk making post-groom rest important
• Long tail tip injuries from enthusiastic wagging

Extend Your Grooming Results

Mist feathering with detangling spray and comb through 2-3 times weekly to prevent mats from developing. Keep sanitary areas trimmed for cleanliness. Protect the long tail from door injuries. Apply a silk-protein leave-in spray after bathing to maintain the coat's signature flowing quality.

Seasonal Care

Borzoi shed their undercoat heavily in spring and moderately in fall. During spring shedding, daily brushing is needed to remove the clumps of loose undercoat. In Houston summers, the silky coat provides some sun protection but limit outdoor time in extreme heat. Never shave a Borzoi -- the coat regulates temperature.

Maintenance Schedule

Brush 2-3 times weekly (daily during shedding), sanitary trims as needed, ear cleaning weekly, nail trims every 3 weeks, teeth brushing 3 times weekly, professional grooming every 4-6 weeks.
