Brushing Routine

The Komondor coat is NEVER brushed in the traditional sense. The characteristic cords must be separated by hand as they develop, typically starting between 8-12 months of age. Once formed, regularly pull cords apart from base to tip to prevent them from fusing into large, plate-like mats. Check the coat weekly by running your hands through to identify any cords that are joining together.

Bathing Tips

Bathe only when necessary, typically 3-4 times per year, using a diluted gentle or whitening shampoo squeezed through each cord. Rinsing is critical and time-consuming since shampoo trapped in cords causes buildup and odor. Drying takes 24-48 hours with high-velocity dryers and fans. Never leave cords damp as this causes mildew and dangerous skin infections.

• Cords fusing into large plates if not regularly separated
• Mildew and musty odor from inadequate drying

Regular cord separation is the primary maintenance between baths. Keep sanitary area cords trimmed shorter for hygiene. The white coat shows staining easily, so blot any dirty areas promptly. Ensure the dog sleeps in a clean, dry area to prevent cord contamination. Good ventilation is essential for coat health.

Seasonal Care

The Komondor's corded coat provides natural insulation in both heat and cold. Summer care involves ensuring the skin beneath the cords stays dry and aired out, which is more challenging in humid climates. Never shave the cords as they take years to regrow. Rainy seasons require vigilant drying after exposure.
