Brushing Routine

Brush 3-4 times per week with a pin brush and long-tooth metal comb. The silky, flowing coat with feathering on the ears, chest, legs, and tail requires attentive maintenance. Use a slicker brush gently on feathered areas to prevent tangling. Pay special attention to the fine, silky ear feathering which mats quickly.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 4-6 weeks using a shampoo formulated for silky coats. Apply a lightweight conditioner to the feathered areas to maintain their flowing texture without weighing them down. The rich mahogany color looks best with a color-enhancing shampoo designed for red coats. Dry with medium heat to preserve the natural wave.

Seasonal Care

Irish Setters shed moderately year-round with a slight increase in spring. In Houston heat, the feathered coat can trap warmth close to the body. Keep the belly and undercarriage feathering thinned during summer. The rich red coat can fade with excessive sun exposure, so avoid prolonged midday sun.
