Brushing Routine

Brush 2-3 times weekly with a slicker brush and medium-toothed comb to maintain the moderately curly to wavy coat. Focus on the longer feathering on the ears, chest, belly, and legs where mats develop. A pin brush works well on the body coat, while a fine comb detangles the ear feathering.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 3-4 weeks with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, especially if the dog is active in water. Boykins are water dogs, so frequent swimming means more frequent bathing to remove lake or pool chemicals. Use an ear drying solution after every water exposure to prevent infections.

Seasonal Care

Boykins shed moderately year-round with increased shedding in spring. In Houston's hot summers, keep the coat trimmed to a manageable length and dry thoroughly after swimming. Their rich brown coat provides some sun protection. In winter, the coat can be kept slightly fuller for warmth during waterfowl season.
