Brushing Routine

Brush 2-3 times weekly with a firm slicker brush and follow with a stripping knife to maintain the flat-lying, harsh, water-repellent wire coat. Hand-strip every 8-10 weeks -- critical for maintaining the correct dense, wiry texture that protects in the field. Use a comb on the bushy eyebrows and beard.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 5-7 weeks with a texturizing shampoo for wire coats. Their coat is naturally dirt-resistant and self-cleaning, so frequent bathing is unnecessary and counterproductive. Never use softening conditioners. The coat should feel rough and bristly after bathing, not silky.

Common Issues

• Loss of weather-resistant wire texture if clipped instead of stripped
• Beard collecting food, water, and field debris
• Dense undercoat matting if not regularly stripped
• Ear infections from hairy ear canals
• Hot spots under the dense coat in humid conditions

Extend Your Grooming Results

Wipe the beard after every meal and water session. Roll the coat weekly with a stripping knife to pull dead hair and maintain texture. Pluck ear hair monthly. Trim between foot pads to prevent debris accumulation. The GWP coat should always feel rough and bristly -- any softness indicates it needs stripping.

Seasonal Care

GWPs blow their undercoat heavily in spring, requiring daily brushing and possibly additional stripping sessions. In Houston summers, the dense undercoat traps heat -- keep it stripped to a working length but never shave. The wire topcoat provides UV protection. In winter, the full coat provides excellent weather protection.
