Brushing Routine

Chipoos (Chihuahua x Poodle) can have coats ranging from the Chihuahua's smooth, short coat to the Poodle's curly coat, with many developing a soft, medium-length wavy texture. Short-coated Chipoos need gentle brushing 2-3 times weekly with a soft bristle brush. Curly and wavy-coated Chipoos need daily brushing with a small slicker brush, using gentle pressure appropriate for their tiny frame. A fine-tooth comb is essential for detecting small mats around the ears and chest.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 3-4 weeks using a gentle, tearless shampoo formulated for small breeds. Chipoos are tiny and chill easily, so use warm water and dry immediately and thoroughly after bathing. A small handheld dryer on low heat works well. For curly-coated Chipoos, use a lightweight conditioner to prevent tangling. Avoid over-bathing as both parent breeds can have sensitive skin.

Keep the face trimmed around the eyes for both visibility and stain prevention. Use a sweater after baths or in cold weather to prevent chilling. Maintain dental hygiene with small-breed dental chews or brushing 3-4 times weekly.

Seasonal Care

Chipoos with Chihuahua-dominant smooth coats shed lightly year-round with minor seasonal increases. Curly-coated Chipoos shed minimally. In summer, keep the coat manageable but never shave completely as the skin sunburns easily on these small dogs. In winter, Chipoos need protection from cold -- a coat or sweater is essential for outdoor time, and moisturize dry skin caused by indoor heating. Avoid grooming in cold environments.

Professional grooming every 4-6 weeks for curly coats, every 6-8 weeks for smooth coats. Daily brushing for curly coats, 2-3 times weekly for smooth. Tear stain cleaning daily.
