Brushing Routine

Shepskies (German Shepherd x Siberian Husky) inherit a thick, dense double coat from two of the heaviest-shedding breeds, creating a grooming-intensive combination. Brush 4-5 times per week minimum with a pin brush for the long topcoat and an undercoat rake for the dense underlayer. During shedding season, daily sessions are non-negotiable. The neck ruff, hindquarters (German Shepherd pants), and tail plume are the thickest areas. A long-tooth deshedding tool helps manage the impressive undercoat volume.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 6-8 weeks with a professional deshedding shampoo and conditioner system. Both parent breeds have self-maintaining coats with natural oils, so resist the urge to bathe more frequently. A high-velocity dryer is essential -- this coat can take 45-60 minutes to dry and the blowout process removes more undercoat than any amount of brushing. During coat blowout, an additional professional deshedding bath at the midpoint is highly recommended.

Seasonal Care

Shepskies experience two of the most dramatic coat blowouts of any breed combination, shedding massive amounts of undercoat in spring and fall for 4-8 weeks each time. Daily deshedding is mandatory during blowout. In summer, never shave a Shepsky -- the double coat protects against heat and sunburn. Provide air conditioning and shade during hot months. In winter, the coat reaches peak density and looks majestic but requires thorough brushing every other day minimum to prevent matting.
