Post-Groom Care Guide

Keep your Puli looking great between professional grooming appointments.

Brushing Routine

Like the Komondor, the Puli coat is NEVER traditionally brushed. Cords are separated by hand as they form, starting around 9-12 months of age. Pull individual cords apart from base to tip regularly to maintain uniform, pencil-thin cords rather than flat mats. Work through the entire coat weekly, paying extra attention to the areas behind the ears and under the legs where cords tend to fuse.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 4-6 weeks using a diluted gentle shampoo worked through each cord. The Puli's smaller size makes bathing more manageable than the Komondor. Squeeze shampoo through cords rather than rubbing. Rinse thoroughly as product buildup creates weight and odor. Drying takes several hours with a high-velocity dryer and additional fan time.

Common Issues

  • Cords joining together into flat mats rather than round cords
  • Musty odor from inadequately dried cords
  • Debris trapped in cords during outdoor activity
  • Eye irritation from corded hair falling across eyes
  • Difficulty assessing skin condition under cords

Extend Your Grooming Results

Weekly cord separation keeps the coat in proper form between baths. The corded coat naturally repels dirt and debris when properly maintained. Keep face cords banded or trimmed away from the eyes for comfort and vision. Trim sanitary area cords shorter for hygiene. Blot any wet or dirty spots promptly.

Seasonal Care

The Puli's corded coat provides natural temperature regulation year-round. The coat grows continuously and cords lengthen over time, eventually reaching the ground in mature dogs. Summer care involves ensuring adequate airflow at the skin level beneath cords. Winter cords provide excellent insulation. Never shave unless medically necessary.

Maintenance Schedule

Separate cords by hand weekly, more frequently for developing coats. Bathe every 4-6 weeks with complete drying protocol (several hours). Trim sanitary cords monthly. Band or trim face cords for eye comfort. Check skin at cord bases weekly. Clean ears weekly. Trim nails every 3-4 weeks.
