Brushing Routine

Brush daily with a pin brush for long coats, or every 2-3 days for shorter puppy cuts using a slicker brush. The single-layer, silky white coat tangles easily, especially behind the ears, in the armpits, and on the chest. Use a fine-toothed comb to check for small mats close to the skin after brushing.

Bathing Tips

Bathe every 2-3 weeks using a whitening or brightening shampoo to maintain the signature white coat. Follow with a lightweight conditioner to prevent tangling without making the coat limp. A purple-toned shampoo helps counteract yellowing. Use lukewarm water and blow-dry on low heat while brushing to achieve a silky, straight finish.

Extend Your Grooming Results

Wipe the eye area 1-2 times daily with a damp cloth or tear stain wipe to prevent buildup. Use a leave-in conditioner spray before every brushing session to protect the delicate hair from breakage. Keep facial hair trimmed or in a topknot. If the coat yellows between baths, a waterless whitening spray can freshen the appearance.

Seasonal Care

Maltese do not shed seasonally since they have hair, not fur. In summer, a shorter cut keeps them cool and reduces maintenance. The white coat shows dirt easily in any season. In winter, the single coat provides minimal insulation, so limit cold exposure. Dry indoor heat can make the coat brittle and static-prone.
