Understanding Your Chorkie's Coat: What Every Owner Should Know
Your Chorkie's coat is the result of one of the more interesting genetic combinations in the toy breed world. The Yorkshire Terrier contributes fine, silky, continuously growing hair. The Chihuahua contributes either a smooth, short coat or a longer, softer coat depending on variety. The results range from sleek and low-maintenance to long and labor-intensive.
Parent Breed Coat Genetics
Yorkshire Terrier: A single coat of fine, silky hair that grows continuously like human hair. Doesn't shed in the traditional sense -- hair falls out individually rather than seasonally. The texture is straight to slightly wavy and extremely fine.
Chihuahua (Smooth Coat): A short, glossy, close-lying coat with minimal undercoat. Sheds lightly year-round with seasonal increases.
Chihuahua (Long Coat): Soft, flat or slightly wavy hair with feathering on ears, legs, tail, and chest. Light undercoat. Moderate shedding.
The coat your Chorkie develops depends heavily on whether the Chihuahua parent was smooth or long-coated.
The Four Chorkie Coat Types
Type 1: Silky/Long (Yorkie-Dominant)
Approximately 25-30% of Chorkies, more common when the Chihuahua parent is long-coated.
- Fine, silky texture that flows when in motion
- Grows continuously and needs regular trimming
- Very low shedding (individual hairs fall rather than clumps)
- Parts naturally along the spine
- Prone to tangling, especially behind ears and under legs
Type 2: Medium/Fluffy (Balanced Hybrid)
The most common type at roughly 35-40% of Chorkies.
- Soft, slightly wavy texture
- Medium length (2-4 inches if uncut)
- Light shedding
- Feathering on ears, tail, chest, and legs
- Body coat remains shorter than furnishings
Type 3: Short/Smooth (Chihuahua-Dominant)
About 20-25% of Chorkies, more common when the Chihuahua parent is smooth-coated.
- Short, smooth, close-lying coat
- May have slightly longer hair on ears and tail
- Moderate shedding (more than silky type)
- Low maintenance texture
- Minimal tangling
Type 4: Wire/Rough (Uncommon)
A less common variation seen in about 10-15% of Chorkies.
- Slightly coarse or rough texture
- Neither silky smooth nor distinctly wiry
- Medium length with an uneven growth pattern
- Light to moderate shedding
- Breaks rather than grows long
Coat Development Timeline
Chorkie puppies often look different from their adult selves:
Birth to 4 months: Puppy coat is typically short and soft regardless of adult type. Color may be darker than adult coloring.
4-8 months: Adult texture begins emerging. Silky-type Chorkies start showing length. Smooth-type coats become sleeker. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at UC Davis notes that coat length and texture in mixed breeds can take 6-12 months to fully express.
8-14 months: Adult coat fully established. Color settled (Yorkie-influenced Chorkies often lighten from dark puppy coats to golden tan or silver-blue as adults).
Color Patterns in Chorkies
Chorkies display a wide range of colors:
- Black and tan (most common, from both parent breeds)
- Golden/blonde (Yorkie influence)
- Brown/chocolate
- White with patches
- Tricolor (black, tan, white)
- Solid black (less common)
- Blue/silver (Yorkie steel-blue gene)

Common Chorkie Coat Issues
Tear staining: Very common due to facial structure. Wipe the eye area daily with a damp cloth. Persistent staining may indicate blocked tear ducts -- mention to your vet.
Static and breakage: Fine Chorkie hair is prone to static, especially in dry winter air. A leave-in conditioner spray prevents breakage from brushing.
Sunburn: Short-coated Chorkies with light skin are susceptible to sunburn on the belly and nose. Limit midday sun exposure or use pet-safe sunscreen.
Thinning coat: Chorkies occasionally develop alopecia (hair loss) patterns. If you notice patchy thinning, consult your vet -- it can indicate thyroid issues common in small breeds.
Temperature and Your Chorkie's Coat
Chorkies struggle with temperature regulation regardless of coat type. At 4-10 pounds, they lose body heat rapidly:
- Below 45F: All Chorkies need a sweater or jacket outdoors
- Smooth-coated Chorkies need layers below 55F
- After baths: Dry completely and immediately -- no air drying for toy breeds
- Summer: Even long-coated Chorkies shouldn't be shaved; the coat protects from sun
